PTA to .... um ... West? Routing help needed

Greetings guys.

We are going to set off West for the weekend, I need to create a route that we can follow to avoid tar as much as possible. I have searched other threads but no luck... I am willing to pay for mapping software or some such... What do you guys use? Google earth is pretty useless.
