Can I use fork oil for other purposes?

Hi Dogs,

I started a new project this weekend.
The cables were very stiff and dry.  The only thin oil I had was fork oil.
So that's what went down the cables.
You guys in the know. Is it a lubricant which will eliminate rust?
Does it have additives that will be harmful in the long run and so on.
Thanks you advise will be helpful in the future for a lot of us.
