'Dirty Air" or turbulence

I have been commuting on the highways around Joburg recently and found that there are specific speeds and distances from other vehicles that create some serious buffeting and turbulence.

Is there some place I can find out more about what the distance and speed parameters are for this turbulence to have subsided before you enter it with a bike. 

My GS has some protection from the wind. How does it feel on a lighter bike. Is it easier or more difficult?
