So one of my clients tell me that their Winterberg tennis club is situated in the Winterberg outside Adelaide which is next to a huge bass dam so I ask for contact details, location etc and soon everything is arranged for me and a few mates to stay over. I must admit I had doubts about the bass and big dam story until I google earthed the dam and it was a very good size, about the bass well we had to throw a line to see if that part was true.
I contacted Florider to see if he was keen and to you dogs that don’t know him, he is down from Germany for a few years. This would be his first bass outing.
NEOZ from East London said he would join us and a friend paul who saw the google earth photo on my PC said he would join and be our luggage donkey.
We met Frikkie one of the members on the gravel and he handed us the keys and told us himself and some others would be braaing at the club and we should join them later.
There were showers with hot water and flushing toilets, angling, snooker table and the tennis courts available to us for a whole R50 per tent fee.
There are three waterfalls close by varying in height from 3m to 70 meters for those that like hiking and tubing. There are bushman paintings in the little caves in the cliff next to the dam.
Frikkie and the other farmers are going to arrange to take us through some farms to the top of the Winterberg from which on a clear day you can see ships on the ocean with a decent pair of binoculars.
There is a couple of hectares of protected yellow wood forest which the will also take us. We will naturally follow them on our bikes to all these spots
There is also an ancient inactive volcano close by where you can collect a lava rock or two.
I had a bad allergic reaction that afternoon and was soon man down but I here that the others bar bill cost a grand total of R95 and Florider even had a small headache the next morning.
Here are some photos of a hidden gem called the winterberg club, enjoy.
