My idea of the most tenacious hardcore adventure bike ....

Spot the trend .... I followed this sequence ! Most folks "upgrade" , I "retrograde ?" Why ? Old School is less fuss ! And big powerful bikes just make the world small , is all. So! :- R1150GS *yawn* KTM950 ....hell yeah ! ...... but not a SIMPLE bike.... I like simple. Simple works in Africa...

New Energy vs Fossil fuel , already here ?

Hi EVERYONE. As bikers live and breath the internal combustion engine , I consider it my duty to alert my brethren to a very promising clean, green, nearly free, and nearly infinite energy technology causing rumblings on the web , while remaining suspiciously off the radar of the likes of...

Back from the Dead - Oldtimer DR breaths again!

Some Dogs are old enough to remember these bikes ?! I've just collected mine and am busy running it in .... complete rebuilt engine with brand new piston, camchain, rebuilt clutch , and some carb attention. This will be the THIRD 650cc thumper redone for me in the last year or so by the...

An unusual dual purpose solution for a really short legged wife.

There are a good many lady riders or short guys who are excluded from riding dualsport bikes because , well , dualsport bikes are tall. The light ones are normally around 250 cc , are STILL too tall , and really battle on open roads to keep 120kph, and have limited range, so anyone trying this...

17 years old and works surprisingly well !!! ( Brag )

Tah Rah This 1994 DR650 restoration was finished 5 minutes ago , you'll understand I HAVE TO show SOMEONE !!!  :ricky: If you started riding this century , feel free to *yawn* , I'll be fine with that, but watch your back , this oldtimer might just blast past you out there in the real world...

Frazerburg loop. A well positioned destination.

I've been riding the Forgotten Highway from the Cape on and off for about 13 years now. Just when you think you know these little dorpies some entrepeneur stands out head and shoulders above the bland dullness of these towns , and creates a place you love at first sight. On the Western...

Frazerburg , Northern Cape .... cool place ( Freezerberg?) to stay !

Howzit all. The owners of this place really resonated with my wife and I last week ,  they have created an really funky biker-friendly spot that has it ALL , check out the bike symbol on the roof. Camping to a big soft bed , steaks to pizza , restuarant to boma , everything in one place. If...

Alternate 650cc and 800cc Suzuki Dual Sport bikes !

Just to establish cred, I'm 49 this year and I've owned and ridden them all , everywhere, all the time , and fast, and slow, and live and breath motorcycles. After 24 years my missus with 710mm short legs EVENTUALLY gets on two wheels and so we headed off over the last 11 days on her TWO bikes. ...

    Backsliding to low tech !!!

Pssst ! I wanna let you okes into a secret. I've gone backwards. Had a GS 1150 , had a KTM950 , had KTM640 , had a KLR '685' , have an '07 DR650se , and now bought a '95 DR650 .... Well poke with with a burnt stick and call me twisted , if the 95 DR isn't the best bloody bike of them all...

17 inch front dual purpose rubber ?

There must be one or two Dogs out there with a Buel Ulysees or Tiger 1050 or other 17" wheeled larger bike,  who do not skrik for gravel travel. Can anyone offer tyre advice ? Pirelli Scorpion Sync is the only rubber that comes to mind , are there other suggestions for 80/20 type riding ? And...

Austrian Bike , no more ...

Oh well , no more Orange in my stable. 44 000km of kTM riding, used where KTM's should be used , owned both 950 and 640 . I am now down to a DR and KLR. It's been fun. My 640 has gone to a good mate , found a nice home. One of the reasons I sold , there are but a few , but one of them is , I...

Tiger 1050 12 000 km, sell, or trade, anyone?

This machine is another under-utilised horse in my stable , has a few tricks up it's sleeve like bar-end LED flickers , fenderectomy, Talbot zorst, airbox mod, remapped , streetfighter bars ... I'll look at any serious cash offer.  This forum is hardly the place to advertise road-orientated...

    KTM640 or KLR'685' , one must go , choose !

Hi My garage of 8 bikes is simply too crowded and I have no less than 4 x 650-class thumpers being under utilised. My wife started riding and it'll be some time for major month-long excursions into Africa for this Dog. If you wanna ride a DR650 / KLR650 ( Schnitz big bore ) / KTM640 or even an...

KTM640Adv 2008 16000km must be nuts to sell but ....

    KTM640's are boring...

...no matter how hard you work 'em , nothing goes wrong. 3800km of the worst and best of Africa and not even a loose mirror ....*sigh* ......oh well , lets change the oil and rubber amd go again. :ricky: Yup, the KTM640 .....carb, tappets, tall, range, 18 + 21  .... the last of the true adv...

Shaped my seat to fit my butt , and it worked : )

Do not try this unless you are stupid like me. Take one utterly violated DR650SE ... great bike btw....but the seat is a plank .... Then think, ok , so I can sit on that thing for maybe 2-3 hours ....what would happen if I filed and fitted it to ME ? So I took the cover off , and started to...

KLR shock, beefier spring vs stock, some hard data.

In case you own a KLR and missed the shock removal thread ...and wondered about the rear spring, which is designed for a 70kg Japanese person .... below is a graph that shows the rear sag, measured in mm from full extension, with stock spring (6.5kg/mm) , vs one  from Top Gun, that is a little...

Where to buy a 120/70 17" front Pirelli Scorpion Sync in RSA ?

I've taken this baby on a little gravel travel and it works pretty well if you respect it's not a KTM640. For 90/10 Tar/Dirt I'd like to try a gentle dualsport trailie rubber, but for a 17" hoop you are kinda stuffed. But these Pirelli's would work if I could find 'em, that is. Any suggestions...

Final Drive: Gearing for longer legs. What is your opinion?

Hi guys Shaft drive guys close this page  :laughing4: My KLR650 '07 is made to BREATH, and produces 45 bhp and 55 Nm on the dyno with an otherwise stock motor. That is over 30% more oomph. Stock rear sprocket is either a 43 or 45 tooth. I am thinking of fitting a 38 rear to get more leisurely...
