Pay it forward: Richa riding suit

Black with white trim riding suit. Nearly new. Complete with zip out liners, body armor, etc. The catch?  The size is double extra small (DXS).  Perfect for a hard riding hobbit. Free to a good burrow.

    EMS availability

I do a lot of riding in the Klein Karoo in the Sutherland - Merweville - Beaufort West - Barrydale - Montague area. Is EMS available in this area? If so, how would I communicate with them? Via cell phone if reception is available, obviously. If no reception, flag down a passing farmer and ask...

    2007 1200 GS side covers

Preparing my GS for sale. Need to refresh the flat black finish on the side covers. Any suggestions as to a cleaner, polish or whatever?

    Tiny but Stubborn

2007 GS. The clutch switch adjustment screw (to allow the bike to start whilst in gear) takes a 2mm Allen key. Small Allen keys are bendy and the screw is tight. Have soaked screw all day with aerosol penetrating lube, but no joy. Any ideas?

    For what it's worth

This topic was covered in the GS/ADV section but I think it merits a mention here as well. I rode my 2007 1200GS for almost seven years but never at night until a week ago. Through a series of miscalculations plus a dollop of downright stupidity I found myself at sunset with 200 km of gravel...

How did my headlights get so out of whack?

This post will cover two related topics: why won't my headlamps adjust down far enough (?); and how to fix the dreaded ball-off-the-socket adjuster snafu.Disclaimer and culpability statement: until last Sunday I had never ridden my 2007 GS at night. This explains why I never thought to check the...

    Routine maintenance: odd outcome

Changed the air filter element in my 2007GS and pushed the starter button to see if everything was OK. Not OK. The engine turned over three times or so and just stopped. I had ridden it into the barn 15 minutes previously, so what could have changed in a quarter-hour? Had I left a rag in the...

    Accessory Fuse Trouble

Electrical gurus kindly chime in. I have a Desert Fox mini-pump that is starting to blow fuses. The accessory plug is hot-wired to the battery with a 15 amp fuse. I have started to use the pump regularly over the last couple of months as I lent my shop compressor to a friend. I finished airing...

    Yet Another Unpleasant Surprise

Need some sage advice from the tech guys/gals. Tried to start my 2007 GS this AM. Cranks like a charm but no start. Last ridden ten days ago, no problems. One hundred km's on a full tank of gas. Fuel pump sounds off when key turned, Fuel system recall done. Strong spark. Side stand switch wired...

    Plastic Cleaning Question

Anyone have any luck in cleaning or restoring the black matte plastic body parts on GS's? The bike is stored in a barn so the discolouration isn't UV induced. I have used dish washing soap, citrus based cleaners, plain water and different kinds of rags and sponges with unsatisfactory results...

    The Stick Coil Curse

I think at least one of the stick coils on my 2007 1200gs is going south. I won't waste time explaining the symptoms since they seem to be pretty well known. I haven't seen much discussion of alternatives to crappy and expensive BMW replacement parts since posts dating back to 2011. I also read...

Touch up paint for valve covers

I've repaired the scratches in the valve cover of my 2007 1200GS and now I need some spray paint to finish the job. Anyone know of a brand and colour of paint that more or less matches the original? Need not be perfect.

Need Riding Partners in the Robertson Ashton Bonnievale Area

I live in the Robertson area and want to organise an informal group for for Saturday, Sunday or occasional weekday rides up into the Karoo. Not leisurely putts up R62 to Barrydale for Saturday coffee or a yearly jaunt up N7 to Namibia but 300 to 400 km all day rides over some of the nicest...

Side Stand Kill Switch Work Around

The side stand kill switch on my R1200GS came apart in the middle of nowhere last weekend. I clipped the wires, closed the circuit and rode home. The bike works fine without a side stand switch just like my Japanese bikes back in the 1970's. I checked the price of a new switch assembly: R1900. I...

    R1200GS side stand foot enlarger

I'm looking for a 'bigfoot' for my side stand. I need one in steel (preferably stainless but mild will do). At the very least the bottom plate must be steel. I've looked at the various vendors but they are either all aluminum or don't state the bottom plate material. Any guidance appreciated.

    Removing Powdercoat

Anyone have any ideas about removing powdercoat from steel tubing? I've tried gasket remover but no joy. There is a product called Citri-Strip that is supposed to be effective but I haven't seen it in SA. A buddy of mine has a sandblasting service but he says that will pit the surface pretty...

    r1200gs antilock brake module bypass

Another request for advice from the technically Wild Dogs. As mentioned in an earlier post the ABS brake module on my 2007 GS crapped out last year. I live in a arid rural area and do half or more of my riding on gravel roads. I don't miss the ABS at all. So what's the problem (?) you might ask...

Need Help with a Mechanical Mystery

OK all you mechanical sleuths: Listen Up! I need some creative thinking backed up with expert advice. My 2007 1200GS had about 40K on the odometer and needed a service which included checking and most likely adjusting the valves. Note #1. I put 120k on my previous R1100RS and did all the routine...

    R1200GS Cheap Front Tire

When I bought a used 2007 R1200GS with 21 000 kms. last year the seller replaced the front tire as part of the deal. Naturally he selected the cheapest 80/20 tire available, a Maxxis Presa Detour. Fine with me. I thought I would burn it up in a few thousand kms. and then put on a "real" tire...

2007 R1200 GS ABS pump failure

The situation: a steady ABS failure light followed by an unsuccessful attempt to clear the "fault code" by a technician at Hamman's in Cape Town. The answer: replace the ABS pump. The problem: R18 000 for a new pump plus R2 000 to install. Obvious possible solutions: a used or rebuilt pump...
