Helmet - when to replace

Hi

Just want some opinion here pls.

Buying a helmet for my whife and I just want to know if I should buy an older helmet (still new , but long on the shelf) or should I rather just cough up for a new helmet which is safer?

I have heard that you should replace a helmet every 3 - 4 years, not sure?

We managed to get a System4 helmet that fits from BMW for R1300, but surely it has been on the shelf for a while if the System 6 is already out.
